I have known Vasanthi Vadi from the day we started People for Animals together. She has, over the years, with very little money and absolutely no government or corporate help, put together an organization which has saved thousands of lives.

People for Animals Hyderabad/Secunderabad is compassionate, driven, but far more importantly, mature, professional and organized like a corporate entity. There are different divisions for rescue, anti cruelty and animal birth control. They are totally committed and trained, as are all the PFAs across India, towards bringing a harmonious interaction between people and animals and making sure that animals get the protections they need and deserve. Every animal under their purview is taken care of, especially the terminal cases.

It is because of People for Animals that animals have become a part of government policy and animal cruelty is now frowned upon. People who treat animals badly are now aware that they can and will be prosecuted. We are still a long way from achieving the goal of having one shelter in every district and a trained body of volunteers. But if corporates and government can step in to join hands with People for Animals we can make the country for humans and animals.

I am very proud of People for Animals and I congratulate Vasanthi and her team on their selfless and excellent work. You should join them.

I believe that whether it is the day, a year, or even one's life- it can slip away meaningless if you do not choose how you want to use it. Choose your purpose. There is so much suffering and injustice, destruction around that here is the place one begins to awaken and understand life.

Animals are fine on their own in nature- but when in contact with humans domesticated, they do not have a voice to express their trauma from exploitation and abuse - hence we must speak up for them. Animal rights exist because there are grave wrongs.

Vasanthi and Dr. Lakshmi, Dr. Ramana were my first friends in Hyderabad way back in 1992 when we attended training together organized by the Animal Welfare Board of India. They found me, they took me into their circle and they supported me when my husband and I started Blue Cross of Hyderabad. Smt. Maneka Gandhi was also there to support us and guide us on how to make a difference for the animals. I find PFA Hyderabad are relentless and persistent, despite the odds, the threats, the cost, the tears, to highlight animal suffering and pursue justice.

They are fearless, focused and first forward when it comes to helping animals. They are also very overworked, under-funded and misunderstood. But I know they are out there working every day, determined to make a difference- and this is way better than many I know, claiming the same.

PFA Hyderabad team, along with Hayathnagar police, rescued eight stolen dogs including rottweilers, dachshunds and German shepherds from hut dwellers near Ramoji Film city. Upon receiving a complaint from volunteers, PFA conducted a raid on the hut dwellers housing and selling the dogs of expensive breeds. The dogs were kept in a deplorable condition, chained to trees, with ropes tied tightly around their mouths.

The hut dwellers refused to disclose where they had got the dogs from, and did not have any proof of ownership. Some locals said that pet dogs that were kidnapped or had got lost in the city were housed in the huts and put up for sale. The price ranges from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 45,000, depending on the dogs’ breed and age.

The dogs are currently at PFA emergency rescue home. We request anyone who has lost their pet Rottweiler, dachshund or German shepherd in the past couple of months to contact us on 7337450643 with proof of ownership.

As Sankranti is approaching, there is an important issue that needs your attention. Do you like flying kites? Yes I’m sure that you do. But please understand the facts associated with the use of the deadly manja thread and make a conscious choice.

As you know, manja used for flying kites is often gummed and coated with powdered and finely crushed glass, metal or other sharp materials. This manja is deadly for thousands of pigeons, crows, owls, endangered vultures and other birds who are wounded or killed when they become entangled in the strings. The bigger the bird, the more are the chances of getting a severe injury. Many a time, the entire wing ends up coming off and then the bird is never able to fly again. Not only on these special days, the lives of birds are at risk because of the dreaded manja that, getting entangled in the trees, sticks there for months and injures birds which build their nests in them.

Manja has also injured and killed many people, including children. It also damages transmission lines and causes power failures. Despite the ban on this dangerous product, the markets are seen flooded with it.

So let’s all take an oath today to not harm the lives of other creatures in the name of sport and opt for the relatively less harmful regular thread for flying kites during Sankranti, the festival of harvest! #saynotomanja#deadlymanja #sankranti

People for Animals Hyderabad was invited over to Gitanjali Devashray school today on the occasion of ‘Pet Day’, to speak to the children regarding raising awareness on various aspects of animal welfare. The children were asked to bring their pets over to the school for a ramp show under supervision of their parents. Team PFA had addressed the students regarding how to report cruelty towards animals, adoption, taking care of community animals, tree plantation, and issues such as the use of manja thread to fly kites during sankranthi, that leads to injuries in birds all year long. The children listened with enthusiasm and gave a great response.

Lucy, an 8 year old GSD has faced severe neglect for the last three years. Never dewormed or vaccinated. No baths or walks whatsoever, tick infestation beyond a shelter volunteer’s worst nightmare.

Lucy’s owner abandoned her when she developed paralysis of hind legs due to tick fever, and we brought her over to PFA rescue home. She was friendly but extremely depressed, and used to cry all day waiting for her owner to return.

Her x-ray shows that she has spondylitis on every vertebra of her spinal column, but the silver lining is that she would be able to walk on her own in around 2 months if she receives good nutrition and regular physiotherapy.

Lucy has a fighting spirit, and she has been trying to walk on her two legs, sit up and explore her surroundings. We’re very moved and are trying to get a wheel cart fabricated for her. We have in mind a wheel cart made of PVC pipes.

But to make this happen, we need someone who can devote their time and energy, nurture her and help her heal. We’re looking for a foster angel who can take her in, motivate her, help her walk around in her cart, and carry out regular easy physiotherapy sessions that would surely lead to faster recovery.

Please help us raise funds for her food, medication and supplements.
